Fireflies in Winter

Now Presenting: The Discovery Stage Playbook Series!

Fireflies in Winter: An Early Readers Theatre Adventure

Join Moth, Flicker, Shimmer, Glow, Spark, and all their firefly friends in a magical story of light, friendship, and the changing seasons! From dancing beneath the night sky to snuggling in for winter’s rest, these tiny fireflies show how even the smallest lights can shine brightly in the coldest months.

Written as an engaging and playful Reader’s Theatre script, Fireflies in Winter is the first of the Discovery Stage Playbook Series and is designed for STEM connections. Perfect for early readers to perform at school, at home, or with friends, the script features simple lines, gentle repetition, and moments for singing, dancing, and imaginative play. Children can practice reading, speaking, and performing – all while bringing this enchanting tale of fireflies to life.

Our inaugural production was the world premiere of Fireflies in Winter by local, professional playwright Nicole B. Adkins, a piece created for the very young (ideal for ages 2-8). Audiences were invited to explore the cycles that happen all around us in life, find the importance and purpose of rest and renewal, and learn about where fireflies go when it’s cold outside, all while dancing and playing pretend right alongside the characters.

Fireflies in Winter toured the area in February 2025, visiting 6 Cobb County Library locations, Woodstock Arts, and Our Giving Garden.

The fireflies then hit the road and visited schools in the Fall of 2025, bringing the magic to nearly 500 preschool students.

If you’d like to continue the firefly magic, reach out to us and ask more about our Fireflies Playbook workshops, encouraging young storytellers to imagine, play, and embody the characters themselves while exploring the first book in our Playbook Series!
